You Don't Need a Full Week to Unplug

There is a myth that a real cottage vacation needs to be a week long. It does not. Some of the best trips are the ones that fit between Friday afternoon traffic and Sunday evening laundry. A weekend cottage getaway near Toronto at Lake Dalrymple Resort gives you two full days of lakefront living without burning a week of vacation time or breaking the budget.

Our resort sits on the eastern shore of Lake Dalrymple, a 3,400-acre spring-fed lake in Carden Township in the Kawartha Lakes region. From anywhere in the GTA, you are here in 90 minutes. That means you can leave work Friday, stop for groceries on the way, and be sitting on your cottage deck watching the sunset before it gets dark. By Saturday morning you are on the water. By Sunday afternoon you are heading home feeling like you have been away for a week.

With 22 fully equipped lakefront cottages, fishing boat rentals at the dock, kayaks at the beach, lawn games on the property, and trails through the forest, there is more than enough to fill a weekend. The only hard part is convincing yourself to go home.

The Perfect Weekend at Lake Dalrymple

Here is how a typical weekend cottage getaway near Toronto plays out when you let the lake set the pace.

Friday Evening

Arrive, Breathe, Light the BBQ

Pull into the resort as the sun starts to dip. Unload the car, open the cottage, and feel the quiet hit you like a wall. No traffic. No sirens. Just loons and the sound of water. Throw something on the BBQ, pour a drink, and sit on the deck as the sky turns orange. The weekend has officially started.

Saturday Morning

First Light on the Lake

Early risers grab coffee from the kitchen and walk to the dock in the quiet before anyone else is up. Rent a fishing boat and hit the weedy bays of Upper Lake Dalrymple where pike are feeding aggressively in the morning hours. Or paddle a kayak along the shoreline from the sandy beach. The lake is yours.

Saturday Afternoon

Beach, Games, Explore

Swim at the beach. Set up a volleyball match. Walk the trails bordering the property. Take the kids to the playground. Or do absolutely nothing and read a book on the deck with the lake in front of you. There is no schedule. That is the point.

Saturday Evening

The Deck, the BBQ, the Sunset

This is the moment everyone remembers. The whole group on the deck, food coming off the grill, the sun painting the sky over the lake. Phones are forgotten. Conversations are real. This is the reason you came.

Sunday Morning

One More Sunrise

Get out on the water one last time. Fish the spots you found yesterday. Paddle a new stretch of shoreline. Or just sit on the dock with a second cup of coffee and watch the mist lift off the lake. Pack up slowly. Drive home feeling lighter than you have in months.

Every Season Has Its Own Weekend

Lake Dalrymple Resort is open spring through fall. Each season offers a different reason to book a weekend cottage getaway near Toronto.

May to June

The Spring Weekend

Quiet, uncrowded, and the best pike fishing of the year. Spring weekends are the hidden gem of the resort season. The wildflowers are out, the trails are lush, and the rates are at their lowest. Perfect for couples and anglers.

July to August

The Summer Weekend

Warm water, long days, and peak family season. Swimming, kayaking, and evening deck time under a sky that does not get dark until 9 PM. Summer weekends book up fast, so reserve early if you want July or August dates.

September to October

The Fall Weekend

Ontario fall colours turn the forest into a postcard. Cooler nights make the cottage extra cozy. Fall fishing is some of the best of the year with aggressive pike and trophy bass. Fewer crowds, lower rates, and sunsets that look like paintings.

Your Weekend Cottage Has Everything You Need

Every cottage at Lake Dalrymple Resort is designed for self-catering comfort. That means you arrive, unpack, and you are set. No trips to town, no scrambling for supplies. Each cottage comes with a full kitchen including stove, refrigerator, cookware, and utensils. You get your own propane BBQ on a private deck with outdoor seating. Indoor dining space and a living area make rainy mornings just as comfortable as sunny ones.

Cottages sleep two to six people. Couples can take one of our smaller, quieter units. Families spread out in the larger cottages. Groups of friends book multiple cottages side by side and turn the whole row into their own private camp. The pet-friendly policy means your dog comes along too.

Weekend Packing List

Bring your own bedding, pillows, towels, groceries, and a cooler. Board games and a book for the deck are highly recommended. Fishing gear if you plan to hit the water. Our on-site store has live bait, snacks, drinks, and Kawartha Dairy ice cream.

What to Do During Your Weekend Getaway

Two days sounds short until you start listing everything available at the resort. Lake Dalrymple gives you enough options to fill a weekend three times over, or enough space to do nothing at all. Fish for Northern Pike, Bass, Walleye, and Muskie on a rented boat. Kayak from the sandy beach along the shoreline. Walk the hiking trails through the forest and into the Carden Alvar Conservation Area, one of Ontario's top birding destinations.

On land, set up a volleyball match, throw horseshoes, challenge someone to shuffleboard, or let the kids loose on the playground and climbing area. When the energy runs out, sit on the deck with the BBQ going and let the lake do the rest. The best part about a weekend cottage getaway near Toronto this close to the GTA is that you never feel rushed. You feel like you have been away for days, not hours.

What is the check-in and check-out time for weekend stays?

Please contact the resort at 705-833-2400 to confirm current check-in and check-out times for your specific dates. We recommend arriving Friday evening so you get two full days at the resort.

Can I arrive Friday evening or do I have to wait until Saturday?

Friday evening arrivals are typical for weekend stays. Most guests arrive between 4 PM and 8 PM on Friday, settle in, fire up the BBQ, and start their weekend that evening. Contact us to confirm your check-in window.

What should I bring for a weekend stay?

Bring your own bedding, pillows, towels, groceries, and a cooler. Fishing gear if you plan to fish, and board games or books for downtime. Our on-site convenience store has live bait, snacks, drinks, and ice cream, but it is not a full grocery store. Stock up on groceries before you arrive.

Are weekend rates cheaper in spring and fall?

Generally, yes. Spring and fall weekend rates are typically lower than summer rates. These shoulder seasons also offer fewer crowds, excellent fishing, and beautiful scenery. The Seasonal Pricing page on our website has a full breakdown of rates by season.

Can I rent a fishing boat for just the weekend?

Yes. Fishing boat rentals are available in half-day, full-day, and multi-day packages. For a weekend stay, most guests book a full-day or multi-day package. Reserve your boat at the same time as your cottage to guarantee availability.

Is there enough to do for a whole weekend?

More than enough. Between fishing, boating, kayaking, the sandy beach, volleyball, horseshoes, cornhole, shuffleboard, basketball, the playground, hiking trails, and the nearby Carden Alvar Conservation Area, you will run out of weekend before you run out of things to do. And doing nothing on the deck is always an option.

Can I bring my dog for a weekend stay?

Yes. All 22 cottages at Lake Dalrymple Resort are pet friendly. Dogs must be quiet, housebroken, on leash outside, and cleaned up after. Bring proof of vaccination to check in. There are excellent walking trails around the property.

How far in advance should I book a weekend?

Summer weekends fill up months ahead. Spring and fall weekends are often available on shorter notice. For the best selection, book as early as you can, especially if you want a specific cottage or need multiple cottages for a group.

Can a group book a weekend for a fishing trip or birthday?

Absolutely. Weekend group bookings are popular for fishing buddy trips, birthday celebrations, bachelor parties, and family reunions. Book multiple cottages side by side and rent boats as a group. Contact us at 705-833-2400 for group availability and pricing.
